Ingredient Notes

  • Butter: Opt for unsalted butter to control the saltiness in the dessert. Ensure it’s at room temperature for even blending.
  • Mini Marshmallows: These tiny delights are preferred as they melt more uniformly, giving the treats a smoother texture. Their inherent sweetness binds the rice krispies perfectly.
  • Puffed Rice Cereal: Regular rice krispies are ideal. They offer that signature crunch and are known for their consistent quality in treats.
  • Butter: Make sure it’s at room temperature for a smooth and easy blending process.
  • Brown Sugar & Sugar: Combining both sugars offers a depth of sweetness and a richer flavor.
  • Milk: Helps in achieving the right cookie dough consistency.
  • Vanilla: A hint of vanilla elevates the cookie dough’s flavor.
  • Flour: The foundation for our cookie dough, it binds all ingredients together.
  • Mini Chocolate Chips: These tiny bits add delightful chocolatey bursts within the cookie dough layer.

Decorating

  • White & Dark Chocolate Chips: When melted, these chocolates are perfect for dipping and drizzling, giving the treats a glossy, appetizing finish.
  • Candy Eyes: These playful additions give life to your Halloween treats, especially if you’re making themed shapes like mummies or monsters. If unavailable, mini chocolate chips serve as a good alternative.
  • Halloween Sprinkles: These colorful and fun additions not only decorate but also introduce an extra layer of texture to the treats.

Step by Step Instructions

Heat Treating the Flour: Before starting, it’s essential to heat treat the flour to ensure it’s safe to eat. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the flour on a baking sheet in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 5-7 minutes. Remove and allow to cool completely before using. This process will kill any potential bacteria, making the flour safe for consumption in no-bake recipes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use large marshmallows instead of mini marshmallows?

While both can be used, mini marshmallows are recommended for this recipe. They tend to melt more evenly and quickly, providing a smoother consistency for your Halloween rice krispie treats. If using large marshmallows, ensure they’re chopped into smaller pieces to facilitate even melting.

What’s the difference between rice krispie cereal and crispy cereal?

Rice krispie cereal is a specific brand of puffed rice cereal, recognized for its consistent quality and texture. Crispy cereal, on the other hand, can refer to any generic brand of puffed rice. For best results, it’s advisable to stick to reputable brands or the classic rice krispies to achieve that signature crunch.

How long do these treats last?

When stored properly in an airtight container at room temperature, these Halloween rice krispie treats maintain their freshness and crunch for up to 5 days. Refrigerating them can extend their shelf life, but they might lose some of their crispiness.

Can I add other festive elements like candy eyeballs?

Absolutely! The beauty of these treats lies in their versatility. You can get creative by adding candy eyeballs, using different Halloween sprinkles, or even crafting shapes to resemble spooky characters.

Is it essential to refrigerate the treats after preparing them?

Refrigeration is recommended, especially after dipping them in chocolate, to ensure the chocolate sets properly and the treats maintain their shape. However, once set, they can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container.

  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips

Decorations

  • 5- oz white chocolate chips
  • 5- oz dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Heat Treating the Flour: Before starting, it's essential to heat treat the flour to ensure it's safe to eat. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the flour on a baking sheet in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 5-7 minutes. Remove and allow to cool completely before using. This process will kill any potential bacteria, making the flour safe for consumption in no-bake recipes.
  • Add the butter in a large pot, and melt over medium heat. When melted, reduce the heat to low and whisk in marshmallows. Once the mixture has completely melted, stir in salt and puffed rice cereal.
  • Line a 9 x 13 inch pan with parchment paper. Press the puffed rice mixture into the pan and let set for 30 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, make cookie dough by creaming softened butter with sugars in a medium bowl with an electric mixer or in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Once pale and fluffy, add milk, vanilla, salt, and flour. Mix until dough forms. Fold in mini chocolate chips.
  • Spread cookie dough over set puffed rice mixture. Refrigerate 30 minutes, or until cookie dough sets.
  • Slice into squares.
  • Melt the white chocolate and dark chocolate in the microwave or over a double boiler. Dip rice krispie treats into melted chocolates and decorate with sprinkles. Refrigerate until chocolate hardens.

To make mummies:

  • Dip rice krispie treats into the melted white chocolate, making sure to coat all sides. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Place treats in refrigerator for 5 minutes for chocolate to set. Fill a small zip top bag or piping bag with remaining melted chocolate. Snip a tiny bit off one of the bottom corners. Drizzle chocolate over treats in a zig-zag patten to create "mummy" look. Add 2 candy eyes or 2 mini chocolate chips for eyes and return to refrigerator for another 5 minutes.
